CATEGORY 5 - AFTER THEFT VEHICLE RECOVERY SYSTEMS

The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre at Thatcham has produced new criteria for After Theft Vehicle Recovery Systems for which the new Category 5 has been created. Companies wishing to install such systems must have Category 5 VSIB accreditation.

The new Category 5 Criteria specifies standards for Manufacturers, Installers and Secure Operating Centres. Manufacturers will have to meet strict criteria for After Theft Vehicle Recovery Systems in much the same way as they do for alarms and immobilisers.

Installers will also be required to meet the new criteria, which among other things specifies that all employees must be security checked, receive product specific training and must ensure that all parts of the system are installed covertly.

Secure operating centres (SOCs) will only activate listed Cat 5 systems Installed by installers meeting the new criteria. The SOCs also require a copy of a VSIB certificate of installation specific to CAT5 systems.

The Police and SOCs are keen to minimise false alarms so an approved SOC will only accept a system that meets the new criteria, and has been installed by a VSIB accredited installer.
